Students gathered in the atrium of USF’s Marshall Student Center Feb. 6 to help kick-off Black Heritage Month, a month-long celebration highlighting the significance of black history and culture.
Students enjoyed food, socializing, and a photo booth, and heard about ways to become involved on campus and in the community, said Justin Monell, coordinator for cultural initiatives for the Office of Multicultural Affairs.
“We strive to meet the needs for diversity across the entire campus,” Monell said.
“Events like this help show diversity for everyone at USF, including for those outside of the culture or who don’t identify with the black community. Everyone can learn about a culture that is not theirs.”
The USF Black Heritage Month is in tandem with the National African American History Month taking place across the country in February, and features, film screenings, lectures, and discussions that highlight both the past and the future of black culture in America.
Black Heritage Month is one of several diversity-centered events hosted by the Office of Multicultural Affairs, all aimed at expanding knowledge, enhancing college experience and creating an inclusive environment on campus.
