Her work explores the ways young people use artificial intelligence and digital tools to create texts, images and performances that bring their ideas to life. She uses arts-based approaches such as process drama, children’s literature and multimodal composition to help educators understand and support how youth learn, think critically and communicate in today’s world.

Smith studies how race, language and immigration shape literacy practices among Caribbean, American and other immigrant and transnational students across global contexts.
