Turnbull's research interests focus on social change, political sociology and qualitative methodology. He has conducted research on the use of gender quotas to improve representational equality in the global South and can discuss elections in the developing world. During Fulbright-funded fieldwork to India, he gathered interviews from city councilors in Jaipur, Rajasthan.
