Dixon is director of the Geospatial Analytics Lab and executive director of the Initiative on Coastal Adaptation and Resilience at USF. Baker's research focuses on the use of nature as an important source of new pharmaceuticals. Compounds that marine invertebrates such as sponges, corals and mollusks develop for their own defenses can be used as human antiviral agents (AIDS, Herpes), antineoplastic agents (cancer) or other pharmaceuticals. In collaboration with pharmacologists, Baker and his team screen new isolates in assays that will identify their potential as drugs.

Cooke is a molecular scientist who is currently leading research backed by a $2 million grant from the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences to develop a novel device for automating the comet assay — essentially making it easier and faster to test cells for DNA damage. The goal is to produce a commercialization-ready device that will help researchers better understand how DNA damage affects health and disease, leading to better prevention and treatment strategies.

His research has addressed climatic and human influences on lake systems, as well as human-mediated soil erosion in watersheds of southwest China, sediment distribution in shallow wind-stressed lakes, mixing processes and redox in stratified warm-monomictic lakes, water quality and sediment geochemistry in Yunnan lakes, anthropogenic alkalization of Florida lakes, and contaminants in lake and estuarine sediments.
