Murphy's research focuses on oil spills, fluid mechanics, animal biomechanics, collective animal behavior and cardiovascular fluid mechanics. He received the NSF CAREER award in 2019 for his work on the fluid dynamics of biological propulsion in tiny insects and zooplankton.
