Owens is an expert at reading brain signals, and his research interests include mood disorders, cognitive control, emotion regulation and working memory training. Using electroencephalography (EEG) and eye-tracking, Owens studies links between mood disorders and brain function to support cognitive therapy for individuals with depression.

Atchley's research in cognitive and clinical psychology and neuroscience focuses on emotion, neuroscience, language, depression and creativity. Her NSF-funded research has investigated how problems of language comprehension persist in readers with a history of developmental and acquired language disorders.
