Mullarkey is a professor of instruction in the School of Information Systems at the Muma College of Business at the University of South Florida. Mullarkey is a Fulbright core research scholar, an extraordinary associate professor in the Centre for Applied Research in Management at the North West University (South Africa), an IIIS interdisciplinary Fellow, a member of the advisory board for the Innovation Value Institute at the National University of Ireland Maynooth, a member of the governance committee for the USF Institute of Applied Engineering, and a Fellow at Tampa General Hospital Research (the academic medicine partner for USF).

Finelli's expertise includes performance theory, theatre history, Caribbean theatre, great performances on film and sport as performance. His publications include the textbook Sound for the Stage, the book Worlds Away, electronic courseware, reviews and over 300 articles and software reviews. His academic research has been published in Theatre Journal, Performing Arts Resources, Southern Theatre and other academic journals. His theatre consulting practice has collaborated on the recent renovation of the Fort Homer Hesterly Armory into an event center, transforming a building that hosted Elvis Presley, John F. Kennedy and professional wrestling into a state-of-the-art theatrical venue.
