Hevner's areas of research interest include design science research, digital innovation, information systems development, software engineering, distributed database systems and healthcare systems.

Research areas include ocean optics and optical remote sensing. Specialties include ocean color remote sensing, radiative transfer modeling, harmful algal blooms, coastal water quality and pollution.

Daniel teaches undergraduate and graduate level courses in business intelligence, business data communications, business application development, distributed information systems, managing information resources, case method publications, systems analysis, healthcare analytics and design, computational problem solving and cybersecurity.

Andrews' research focuses on topics in health information behaviors and communication, standards and controlled terminologies and various topics in library and information science. He has been an investigator on several federally-funded grants (NIH, DoD, AHRQ, CDC), and he is co-editor of the first book on Clinical Research Informatics.
